Macau | Legislators aim to reach consensus on new hotel law before April

Macau (MNA) – Launching a series of discussions on Tuesday about the new hotel law, legislators claim they aim to reach consensus and deliver a draft before April.

The 2nd Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly (AL) held the first meeting for the new draft of the hotel law today.

The president of the committee, Chan Chak Mo, said that legislators and the government will concentrate efforts on this law and “hopefully” have the discussions completed in April.

The law allows heritage-listed buildings or buildings waiting for heritage evaluation to host accommodations in the future.

Heritage buildings might enjoy exceptional treatments of technical nature and the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) can give opinions during this process.

According to Mr. Chan, whether IC’s opinions would have a binding force or influence regards the committee.

Meanwhile, non-profit charities such as the YMCA and the Associacao Das Aguias Voadoras de Macau are currently running hostels in the city.

Both the legislators and the government agree that the hotel law should not rule those hostels since they are not open for business, according to Mr. Chan.

The committee has also requested the government to clarify which department is regulating or will regulate those hostels managed by charities in the future.

The committee will hold another round of discussions about the hotel law tomorrow.
