On a grey and rainy morning, Chen Si patrols the Nanjing bridge soaring above China’s Yangtze river, determined to stop the desperate from jumping into the swirling waters below. It is a routine he has kept up every weekend for eighteen years, during which time he says he has stopped hundreds of people from jumping off the mile-long bridge.
