Wynn Macau, Macau Special Olympics offer golf experience for individuals with intellectual disabilities

Nearly 40 members of the Macau Special Olympics (MSO) had the opportunity to try their hand at golf on Thursday (today) under the guidance of international professional golfers, who currently gather in the city to compete in the International Series Macau presented by Wynn.

The Gold Experience Day, which was jointly organised by local integrated resort operator Wynn Macau and MSO, took place on the Wynn Palace South Lawn. This event is one of the outreach activities associated with the International Series Macau presented by Wynn, a tournament being held at the Macau Golf & Country Club from Thursday until Sunday (March 17).

Professional golfers Berry Henson from the United States and Ben Leong from Malaysia participated in the Gold Experience Day on Thursday. They provided guidance and tips to MSO members on playing mini golf and engaging in various golf-themed games.

“About 30 to 40 individuals with intellectual disabilities, who have never played or experienced this sport before, took part in the Golf Experience Day,” Hetzer Siu, the National Director of MSO, stated.

“As there may be certain stereotypes among the public that people with disabilities are not suited for sports, these types of activities can promote awareness of an inclusive society and help the public understand that individuals with disabilities are just like us—they too can participate in sports through training,” he explained.

To mark the debut of the International Series in Macau, Wynn is also hosting the “Golf Village” experience on the Wynn Palace South Lawn from Thursday to Sunday. The Golf Village offers golf-themed games, mini golf, a variety of delicious local specialties, and other attractions for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The MSO will continue to encourage more members and children to participate in the golf experience on the Wynn Palace South Lawn in the coming days, Siu said on Thursday.

He also mentioned that one of the goals of MSO, an organisation that offers sports training and athletic competitions for individuals with intellectual disabilities, is to enable more members to engage in international competitions this year.

During a press conference held earlier this week regarding the International Series Macau presented by Wynn, the tournament organisers, including Wynn Macau, presented a cheque of US$25,000 (MOP200,000) to MSO. The resort operator stated in a press release that the donation was intended to support the association’s charitable initiatives.

The International Series Macau presented by Wynn is one of the ten events on the 2024 season of the Asian Tour, the premier professional men’s golf tour in Asia.
