Macau | Municipal Bureau confirms that Canidrome can use facilities until September 29

Macau (MNA) – Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd. will be allowed a 60-day extension to use its current facilities in the north of the Macau Peninsula, after submitting a resettlement plan on July 31, the Civic and Municipal Bureau (IACM) confirmed on Tuesday in a release.

The extension would mean the Canidrome will be able to use its facilities until September 29, without having to pay a fine amounting between MOP20,000 to MOP100,000 for each abandoned greyhound – totalling some 533 dogs.

The plan is awaiting approval from the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT), the Canidrome announced in another release also sent on Tuesday.

The Canidrome along with Anima – Society for the Protection of Animals (Macau) had announced on July 27 that the greyhounds currently remaining in the dog racing facilities will be rehoused in lot E number 218 in Largo de Pac On in Taipa.

The centre will be dubbed the International Centre for The Rehoming of Greyhounds (Macau).

According to the company, villas and detached houses totalling more than 15,477.65 square metres will be used to house the greyhounds, which would provide around 9.29 square metres of activity space for each dog.

Anima will provide volunteers who will walk the dogs daily, the release from the Canidrome added.

IACM has said that the relocation expenses will be handled by the Canidrome, and that in line with the Animal Protection Act, the Bureau will need to inspect the premises of the centre.

The Canidrome will need to inform the IACM seven working days before the deadline to ensure the centre is in order.

The centre is estimated to cost MOP25 million (US$3.09 million) annually.
