Macau | Police mulling purchase of another 100 body cams

Macau (MNA) – The city’s security department is planning to purchase another batch of 100 body cameras for police use, said the Secretary for Security, Wong Sio Chak, during a press conference on Monday.

“It would be a plan for this year,” indicated the Secretary. “And of course [regarding when the cameras would be put into use] we need to first undergo a set of procedures.”

The Secretary did not reveal details about what he meant by “procedures,” but pledged that he will inform the public when the new batch is put into operation.

One hundred police officers are currently equipped with body cameras. The measure was implemented on March 14 this year.

The Secretary remarked during the press conference today that the police in Hong Kong have been using body cameras since 1993, while also mentioning that a city in Guangdong has 400 police equipped with cameras – although he did not identify which city he was referring too.

“This kind of equipment is necessary for ensuring the enforcement of the law in certain situations,” stated the Secretary, again without clarifying which types of “situation” he was referring to.

Citing information disclosed on the weekend by the Deputy Commissioner of the Public Police Security Force (PSP), Lao Wan Seong, Mr. Wong said as of Saturday there have been four cases involving the use of body cameras by police.
